RICHMOND, Va. (STACKER) — Many families across the country have traditions related to restaurants. These may include returning to the same place every year for a birthday, going to the favorite spot around the corner for Sunday brunch or eating pie at the neighborhood pizza place on Friday nights.

While many diners visit the same restaurants every year, every month, or even every week, others want to try something new. Today’s consumers “are looking for new taste experiences that stimulate their palate and give them a break from their daily routine,” said Stacey Kinkaid, vice president of product development and innovation at US Foods, in a statement. “The trend toward global flavors demonstrates this, as diners seek discovery and a break from the mundane.”

US Foods, a major domestic food distributor, surveyed 1,000 people representing the demographics of the American population about their eating out and takeout habits. They found that the average person eats out about three times a month for a variety of reasons, whether it’s to socialize or enjoy the atmosphere, to celebrate something special, or to avoid the hassle of cooking (and cleaning up afterward).

When it comes to the type of restaurants they prefer to eat at, casual dining (62%) tops the list, followed by fast food (57%) and fast casual (54%). Contemporary casual (32%) and bar and grills (25%) round out the top five.
