South Bend Cubs press release

Appleton, WI – After winning the first two games of this week’s series in Appleton against the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers, the South Bend Cubs fell to defeat in the next four games, losing Sunday afternoon’s game 2-1 to the Milwaukee Brewers affiliate.

Right-hander Alexander Cornielle, making his fifth career start against the Cubs, was solid on the mound, throwing six scoreless innings. Cubs right-hander Ty Johnson allowed just two runs in four innings, with both runs coming on RBI groundouts.

It was Johnson’s second start this week after pitching four shutout innings in South Bend’s 8-4 win on Tuesday.

Sunday began with an RBI double by Luis Lara in the 1st inning, then he was beaten by a groundout by Jadher Areinamo. Later in the 4th inning, Johnson escaped a bases-loaded situation with minimal damage. The Rattlers had their pockets full, no one out, and they could only score one run.

Trailing 2-0, South Bend had some bad luck in two innings against Cornielle. In two separate innings, Brett Bateman reached base to lead off an inning. In both innings, a line drive to the left side of the infield resulted in a double play after Bateman stole second base in both innings.

The Cubs finally made their breakthrough after a single by Ethan Hearn in the 7th inning brought in Jonathon Long.

In the 8th and 9th innings, Aaron Rund was able to make a six-out save as South Bend scored the tying points in each.

After this loss, the Cubs now have to go home and play three games at Four Winds Field and then three at Dozer Park in Peoria against their St. Louis Cardinals affiliate team, the Peoria Chiefs.

On Monday night, right-hander Erian Rodriguez will pitch for South Bend at Four Winds Field. Chicago Cubs Gold Glove outfielder Ian Happ will return to South Bend to meet fans and sign autographs. Tickets are available at First pitch on Monday is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
