CLEVELAND (WJW) — Freshwater swimmers have discovered that Lake Erie is, well, pretty awesome.

The place was recently named the best lake in the country in USA Today’s “10Best” readers’ poll.

Here’s what the publication had to say about the large body of water that is well known to many people in Northeast Ohio:

Although it is the shallowest of North America’s Great Lakes, it offers enormous potential for both tourism and outdoor adventure. Buffalo, Cleveland and Toledo are just a few of the historic cities to explore along the Erie shores. Recreational opportunities range from fishing to bird watching to wreck diving.

How did Lake Erie, which is not without its faults, come in at No. 1? Industry experts and 10Best editors selected the nominations, and then average, everyday lake visitors voted.
