Press release from the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

GRAND CHUTE, WI – Alexander Cornielle pitched six scoreless innings and the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers mustered just enough offense to earn a 2-1 victory over the South Bend Cubs on Sunday afternoon at Neuroscience Group Field. The win was the fourth in a row for the Timber Rattlers and gave them a 4-2 series sweep over the Cubs.

Luis Lara began the first half of Wisconsin’s inning with a double. He got to third base on a passed ball. Jadher Areinamo brought Lara home with a grounder to shortstop for a 1-0 lead.

Cornielle retired the first nine batters he faced before Brett Bateman got on base on an error early in the fourth inning. Bateman was walking on an 0-2 pitch when Ed Howard hit a line drive right to Luke Adams at third base. Bateman was easily doubled from first base for the second out. The Cubs got the next three batters on base with two singles and a walk before Cornielle maintained the lead with a three-pitch strikeout.

Areinamo extended his hitting streak to fourteen games with a single to start the Rattlers’ fourth inning. Luke Adams followed with a single and Matt Wood worked a walk to load the bases. Tayden Hall brought Areinamo home with a grounder and the Rattlers (47-28 overall, 5-4 second half) took a 2-0 lead.

South Bend (31-44, 4-5) had only one baserunner left against Cornielle. Bateman hit a bunt to start the sixth inning. He walked again, this time with one out, when Jefferson Rojas landed a pitch. Shortstop Gregory Barrios caught the line drive with a leaping catch for the second out. Then Barrios jogged over to tag Bateman for the final out of the inning.

Cornielle allowed three hits, one walk and five strikeouts in his six scoreless innings, putting him on track for his fourth win of the season.

The Cubs scored in the seventh inning against Stiven Cruz. Jonathan Long hit a single and grounded to second base. Ethan Hearn brought Long home with a two-out single, cutting Wisconsin’s lead to one run.

Aaron Rund was called into the game at the beginning of the eighth inning and avoided a one-out single and two-out walk by striking out Long for the last out.

In the ninth inning, Parker Chavers’ fly ball was dropped into shallow left field by Barrios, allowing Chavers to get to second base to start the inning. Rund got a strikeout and a groundout to right. Chavers was on third base with two outs for the tying run, and Rund finished the game with his third strikeout of the game and his second save of the season.

Areinamo is 21-53 during his 14-game hitting streak, the longest hitting streak by a Timber Rattler this season. It is the longest hitting streak by a Wisconsin player since LG Castillo had a 15-game hitting streak from June 16 to July 10 during the 2021 season.

Wisconsin is back in action Monday night with a game at ABC Supply Stadium against the Beloit Sky Carp. Mark Manfredi (4-2, 4.04) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers. Jacob Miller (3-3, 2.72) is scheduled to start for Beloit. The game begins at 6:35 p.m. The radio broadcast will be on AM1280, WNAM, and the Community Blood Center pregame show begins at 6:15 p.m. The game will also be available online and via the Bally Live app.
