It was a stellar weekend filled with milestones for the Scrappers Racing teams at the Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Nationals in Norwalk, Ohio. Not only did Top Fuel rookie Jasmine Salinas set a new personal best time on her Scrappers Racing dragster, but her sister, Pro Stock Motorcycle star Jianna Evaristo, gained significant momentum on her Scrappers Racing Buell, securing a new personal best time and a new personal best speed over the course of the event. Jianna also won the legendary NHRA Ice Cream Eating Contest, held only at Summit Racing Equipment Motorsports Park, for the second year in a row, defending her title in emphatic fashion.

Jianna Evaristo started qualifying on a high, setting the second fastest passing lap of the first qualifying round in 6.802 seconds at 200.62 mph, earning herself some valuable bonus points in the process. On Friday night, the talented pilot set the fastest speed of her career, hitting 201.13 mph in 6.811 seconds. On Saturday, she set similarly consistent passing laps, but it was the elapsed time of her first qualifying round that put her fourth on the elimination list.

In what was considered the “main match” of race day, Jianna faced Chris Bostick in the first elimination round. Bostick shut down early and Jianna set a new personal best on her way to winning the first round, running a 6.754 at 200.53. In the quarterfinals, Richard Gadson got the starting advantage over Jianna and held the lead to advance to the semifinals.

“Winning that ice cream contest put us on a positive track for the weekend,” Jianna joked. “Things are coming together for us as I continue to gain more confidence with this Buell. Matt and Angie Smith have been with me every step of the way and it feels good to be making progress. This track is so cool and the fans are just amazing. I’m happy to have set some new personal records in front of such a great fan base.”

Top Fuel rookie Jasmine Salinas is definitely hitting her stride in her first season in the NHRA Mission Foods Drag Racing Series. After putting together consistently impressive runs throughout qualifying, the talented driver set a new personal best speed in Saturday’s final qualifying run when she ran around the course in 3.762 seconds at 332.02 mph.

Jasmine entered eliminations from the No. 12 qualifying position and faced off against Tony Stewart, one of the most successful figures in motorsport history, in the first round. In a surprise upset, Jasmine defeated Stewart with a 3.750 pass at 329.34 to advance to the second round for the second time in her first professional season.

In the quarterfinals, Jasmine faced four-time Top Fuel World Champion Steve Torrence. She got a starting advantage with a respectable reaction time of 0.065 seconds, but her Scrappers Racing dragster lost power shortly after the start and Torrence took the win.

“It was really good for all of us to get another round win,” said Jasmine. “We’re getting more and more consistent and right now everything is an opportunity to learn and improve. Unfortunately we had a part failure when I hit the gas in E2 which ended our day. Overall it was a motivating weekend. We’ll just keep building on these milestones and hopefully more round wins are in our future.”

The Scrappers Sisters’ next stop on the NHRA Mission Foods Drag Racing Series tour is July 19-21 at the NHRA Northwest Nationals at Pacific Raceways just outside of Seattle.
