SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – MGM Springfield has partnered with Friends of the Homeless to donate hygiene kits to those in need.

With the heat this summer, the homeless may need more than just a bed. Friends of the Homeless shelter serves over 1,200 people each year. This emergency shelter and resource center houses 180 people per night, all of whom need a bed, a meal, and toiletries. That’s where MGM Springfield comes in.

“We are honored and so proud to donate over 3,000 hygiene kits to our friends, Friends of the Homeless. And these will be sensational for those who need them and will certainly help people have a nicer and better summer,” said Jennifer McGrath, Director of Philanthropy and Engagement at MGM Springfield.

MGM employees packed individual kits containing a comb, conditioner, shampoo, toothpaste, floss and personal notes. These kits are available to guests seeking shelter at Friends of the Homeless in Springfield.

Friends of the Homeless provides its guests with a bed, a meal and a shower. In hot weather like this week, a hygiene kit and a cold shower help a lot.

“You know, we provide on-site mental health care and nursing, we serve food every day to anyone who needs food, but these toiletries go a long way in making people feel comfortable, giving them dignity and we are so grateful for that,” said Geoffrey Oldmixon, vice president of marketing and development at Friends of the Homeless.

With locations in Springfield, Northampton, and Greenfield, Friends of the Homeless is more than an emergency shelter. By assigning a social worker to each guest, Friends of the Homeless strives to help guests find jobs and housing. Their counseling center also functions as a cooling center to provide daytime cooling. Those in need of these services should visit a Friends of the Homeless location or their website.

MGM says they are honored to partner with Friends of the Homeless and hope to continue this partnership for many years to come.
