HAMLET – Runs were in short supply Monday, but the Hamlet American Legion baseball team started its next playoff series with a win.

To open the second round of the Area 2 Conference playoffs, No. 1 Hamlet defeated No. 2 Beaufort 4-2.

Post 49 took a one-game lead in the best-of-five series, scoring a run in the first inning and three more runs in the fourth.

James Eason threw six scoreless innings to secure the win. Also starting were Jeremiah Ritter and Dylan Tilson, who made the save.

JD Scarbrough, Austin Mooring, John Carre and Jacob Williams each scored a run batted in. Williams led the team with two hits and Eason had a double.

Hamlet’s defense executed three double plays, resulting in a total of seven baserunners being left behind.

The second game is scheduled for Tuesday at 7 p.m. between No. 1 Hamlet (20-4) and No. 2 Beaufort (10-5) at Memorial Park.
