Springfield man pleads guilty to distributing child sexual abuse material Norwalk Police Remind Residents Not to Use Golf Carts on Public Roads

It is the beginning of July, the swimming pools are open and families still have time to go on holiday. But the start of the new school year is not far away.

For many public schools in the Springfield area, the first day of the new school year is less than six weeks away.

State law prohibits public districts from setting the first day more than 14 days before Labor Day, and many school boards have agreed to a calendar that would have classes begin either on the earliest possible day — Monday, August 19 — or the next day, Tuesday, August 20.

Christian County districts have made it easy for parents. In all districts but one, the first day of school is August 20. Nixa starts a day earlier, on August 19.

A quick look at district websites shows that many have posted lists of school supplies, school lunch prices, and calendars of back-to-school events.

Springfield, Republic and Ash Grove, among others, have planned back-to-school celebrations that provide families with free school supplies and essentials for the first day of school.

In Missouri, private schools do not have to follow state law and in this part of the state they may begin as early as August 14.

Many local colleges and universities begin classes on the same day as Springfield public schools. This is part of a coordinated effort as calendars are discussed in advance, with a few notable exceptions.

Fall classes at Cox College begin a week earlier, and classes at Evangel University do not begin until August 29.
