SASR Stock Earnings: Sandy Spring Bancorp Beats EPS, Misses Revenue for Q2 2024 Young artists playfully design Olympia in two-part Paris show

The Fourth of July is over and millions of people have enjoyed the fireworks display across this great country. However, one community in the Lone Star State was left a little stunned and disappointed when a fire broke out during a fireworks display.

The WesTex Connect fireworks display was scheduled for the day before the national holiday, July 4th, much to the dismay of many residents. Nevertheless, the fireworks display went ahead as planned, despite the extreme drought in Texas.

What happened?

As several residents noted, there were several delays due to technical issues with the drone show. When the fireworks began, residents were treated to some impressive displays as the sounds of freedom rang through the air.

The oohs and ahs quickly gave way to concern as a fire soon erupted over the horizon and sirens could be heard in the distance. (See more photos of the fire in the gallery below.)

In conclusion, I am happy to report that no one was injured and the damage was minimal as no buildings caught fire. Nevertheless, the Fourth of July was an interesting holiday that left many residents perplexed.

WesTex Connect issued the following statement following the fire, assuring residents that they had taken all necessary precautions and praising the quick response of the Abilene Fire Department.

Safety is a top priority at the WesTex Connect Fireworks Spectacular. The fire that broke out at the event this year was a brush fire that was contained by the Abilene Fire Department and a rack on one of our own fireworks trailers. There were no injuries or evacuations. There was no damage to the Wylie schools, stadium or other property.

We work very closely with the local fire department for weeks, days, before, during, and at the end of each event. Precautions are taken at every fireworks show and taken very seriously. Fireworks can always cause outages, small brush fires are common, so firefighters are on site in affected areas. Grass fires tend to appear larger and closer at night. The fire was immediately contained by the Abilene Fire Department. The fire department called in additional vehicles as an additional safety measure. The fire area was monitored throughout the night to ensure hot spots did not cause a re-ignition. The Abilene Fire Department will continue to monitor the area as they do with any fire per their protocols, regardless of size.

We want to thank the Abilene Fire Department for all they do for the city, their dedication, positive attitude and professionalism as firefighters. While we regret that the show was not quite as planned, we are thankful for everyone’s safety. We thank our staff and crew who forego their vacation and work tirelessly to bring you this show each year. We thank Wylie ISD for being a generous host and allowing us to use their facilities to bring the 2024 fireworks spectacular to the Wylie community and the City of Abilene. We thank our community supporters, sponsors, bands and everyone who participated in the event. We also thank those who sent us positive and encouraging messages and offered their help. You are the reason we do this!

Here, too, I am grateful that no one was injured and nothing was destroyed, because it could have been much worse.
