1974 was an immensely important year for Bob Dylan and the entire rock world, which was rocked by the legendary singer-songwriter’s explosive return to the stage. Almost a decade after the 1966 motorcycle accident that forced the artist to retire from the live circuit, he returned triumphantly, infusing his newly electrified approach with a double dose of determination, enthusiasm and spirit. Dylan and The Band – also at the height of their fame – stormed arenas for the first time in his career, playing 30 concerts in 42 days and setting a new standard for rock performance that stands to this day.

Now, 50 years after this groundbreaking era, Columbia Records and Legacy Recordings have announced The live recordings from 1974a definitive compendium of all professionally recorded performances from the legendary tour. To celebrate the golden anniversary of Dylan’s re-emergence, the labels scoured the archives to capture his ravishing stage presence, culminating in unprecedented detail on a 27-CD box set. The collection includes an incredible 417 previously unreleased live tracks, sourced from the 1/4-inch tapes and cassettes of every single remaining stereo soundboard recording and the remixed 16-track tapes that David Geffen prepared for release on Before the flood.

In keeping with the release of The live recordings from 1974Third Man Records has announced The live recordings from 1974 – The missing songs from before the flood. Based on the same original multitrack recordings as those in the larger box set, this collection features carefully selected versions of each track that Dylan performed but never released on the classic 1974 live album. The Third Man version will be pressed on three vinyl LPs and a 7-inch record – plus a tri-fold sleeve, tour souvenir book and other archival materials – and released through The Vault, the label’s vinyl subscription service.

The live recordings from 1974 will be available and delivered on streaming services on September 20th; the album is available for pre-order now. For fans overwhelmed with anticipation, the labels have released a preview track: a previously unreleased version of “Forever Young,” which was supposed to have been recorded in Seattle on February 9, 1974.
