SOUTH BEND – Nika Burdova had good reason to smile after the second round on Tuesday at the 97th Greater South Bend Metro Open Women’s Golf Championship.

“At least I did better than yesterday,” said the 23-year-old Indiana University golfer from the Czech Republic after making a birdie on the 284-yard par-4 18th hole.th hole at Elbel Park to complete an even-par round of 72 that puts her at one under par with 141 strokes and three shots ahead of Delaney Wade.

On Tuesday at Elbel, Wade started with two bogeys and Burdova made a birdie on the 386-yard par-5 second hole to build a three-shot lead. Burdova, who never trailed, finished with three birdies to make up for three bogeys. Wade also made three birdies but could not make up for four bogeys and a double bogey in her three-shot-over 75 round.

Burdova and Wade are expected to play together in the final round on Thursday if the remnants of tropical depression Beryl do not render Erskine Park unplayable. They will be paired with last year’s runner-up Selah Unwin, a junior at Bethel College, who shot five strokes over par 77 on Tuesday and tied with defending champion Lori Horan, a 24-time winner of the tournament, for a 14-stroke over par 156. Horan shot 82 on Tuesday.
