A New Orleans-style sandwich shop across the Hudson River will be the latest restaurant to open in Bergen-Lafayette, with Cheeky Sandwiches hoping to debut in Jersey City later this year.

The Hazel, a relatively new project at 89 Monitor Street, has officially signed a deal with Cheeky Sandwiches to occupy the ground floor space. The upcoming restaurant has been confirmed by Alpine Residential and Fields Grade and will open in a neighborhood that has seen a lot of development in recent years.

Cheeky Sandwiches had a store on Orchard Street in Manhattan for many years, but that location is now closed and they will be opening in Essex Market in New York City. The Jersey City location will be their second location when it is operational.

The restaurant had a distinct hole-in-the-wall atmosphere with limited seating during opening hours but a well-received menu that included a short rib sandwich or a po’boy with 1/2 shrimp and 1/2 oysters, dressed with lettuce, tomatoes, pickles, lemon juice, mayo and ketchup.

A NY Mag story about the first Orchard Street location said Cheeky Sandwiches owner Din Yates had bread shipped north from New Orleans’ John Gendusa Bakery, adding to the company’s authenticity.

Cheeky Sandwiches has not yet announced an official opening timeline for the Jersey City location, but can be followed on Instagram under the handle @cheeky_sandwiches.

The restaurant is the latest establishment to open in the area near the Liberty State Light Rail Station, following The Roxy’s recent opening nearby and MochiDough’s upcoming arrival.
