(WJET/WFXP) – Pennsylvania State Police crash and enforcement results from Independence Day weekend 2024 have been officially released, showing more crashes, tickets and arrests than last year.

In total, 774 traffic accidents were investigated by state police over the weekend this year across the Commonwealth – 64 of which were alcohol-related accidents and four were fatal alcohol-related accidents.


Law enforcement results showed that there were a total of 556 drunk driving arrests, 7,975 speeding violations, 225 child seat failures and 876 seat belt violations. There were 19,353 other violations reported.

Comparing these data with the data for 2023, there is an increase in the total number of accidents, citations, fatal accidents related to drunk driving, and arrests for drunk driving.

In Troop E (Erie, Crawford, Venango and Warren Counties), there were 44 accidents – nine of which were related to drunk driving and 12 of which resulted in injuries. However, there were no fatalities or fatal cases of drunk driving.

In terms of law enforcement data, there were 44 arrests for drunk driving, 489 for speeding, 10 child seat violations, 68 seat belt violations, and 904 other violations.

Force E data showed two more drink-driving arrests and three more warnings than in 2023, but fewer traffic fines were issued and five fewer accidents involving injuries.

2023

In 2023, PSP investigated 668 crashes, of which three were fatal and 194 people were injured. 59 of these crashes were alcohol-related, but none were fatal.

In law enforcement, 505 people were arrested for drunk driving and 7,929 tickets were issued for speeding, 210 tickets for not installing a child safety seat, 845 tickets for not wearing a seat belt and 14,754 tickets for other reasons.

2022

In 2022, there were a total of 649 accidents, including four fatal accidents and 170 injuries. There were also 52 alcohol-related accidents.

This weekend, State Police investigated 515 drunk driving arrests and issued 8,769 speeding tickets, 297 tickets for improper use of child safety seats and 14,257 other tickets.

These statistics cover only incidents investigated by State Police and do not include incidents to which other law enforcement agencies responded.
