The National Weather Service issued a tornado warning today. The observations and warnings now also apply to western New York State.

A tornado warning was issued for Chautauqua County shortly before noon on Wednesday. The warnings and watches now also apply to other parts of western New York State.

The following districts are currently affected by the warnings:

Allegany – Tornado warning until 9 p.m.

Cattaraugus County – Tornado Warning (Northwest) / Severe Thunderstorm Warning

Chautauqua County – Tornado Warning (Northeast) / Severe Thunderstorm Warning

Erie County – Tornado Warning (Southwest) **At 12:21 p.m. EDT, a confirmed tornado was spotted near Silver Creek, 11 miles east of Dunkirk, moving northeast at 45 mph. A warning is in effect for Central Erie County until 1:15 p.m.

Genesee County – Tornado warning

McKean County – Tornado warning

Niagara County – Tornado warning

Orleans County – Tornado warning

Potter area – Tornado warning

Wyoming area -Tornado warning

If you see a tornado, you are advised to go into your home or vehicle to seek shelter. The best place in the home is the basement or a small central room in a sturdy building.

In addition to tornadoes, heavy rain, flash floods, thunder and lightning are common occurrences, reminding people not to attempt to drive their vehicles through flooded areas.
