SOUTH BEND, Ind. – REAL News Michiana has learned that all charges have been dropped against former South Bend City Council candidate Roosevelt Stewart (R). South Bend police arrested Stewart in August 2023 after he was accused of beating and strangling his 15-year-old daughter in a drunken rampage. A judge dropped all charges Wednesday morning.

Stewart has denied the allegations from the start, claiming his daughter made up a story after he took away her cellphone to discipline her. He claims investigators then influenced the girl’s initial statements by leading her through circumstances that would increase the severity of the charges against him.

“I am grateful that the truth has come to light about this unfortunate situation involving myself and my family,” Stewart said in a statement to RNM. “I want to thank everyone for the support they have shown us during this time. Now it is time for my family and I to move forward and heal.”

The arrest came less than three months before the 2023 general election and is likely to have had a significant impact on the Republican election outcome.
