Dayton, Ohio – The Dayton Dragons battled back from an early 2-0 deficit to defeat the South Bend Cubs 5-4 on Wednesday night. With the win, the Dragons moved into a tie with West Michigan for the lead in the second half of the East Division playoffs. Dayton has won the first two games of the six-game series against South Bend.

7,518 spectators attended the Day Air Ballpark in the heart of the Water Street District.

Game overview:

South Bend scored two runs in the first inning against the Dragons’ new starting pitcher, Brian Edgington, who was making his Midwest League debut. But the Dragons came back with two runs in the first inning to tie the game. The first two Dayton batters, Sal Stewart and Hector Rodriguez, got walks to start the inning and Cam Collier hit a single to left to load the bases. A wild pitch brought Stewart into the game and Leo Balcazar’s ground out brought Rodriguez into the game and tied the game.

The Dragons took the lead in the second inning. Victor Acosta worked a walk with one out and got from first to third on a hard single to right by Cade Hunter. Stewart hit an infield single to bring in Acosta and give the Dragons a 3-2 lead.

The Dragons scored two more runs in the third inning. With one out, Leo Balcazar hit a single to right field and Ethan O’Donnell followed with a bunt single. Logan Tanner then hit a ball over the fence in right-center for a ground rule double that caught Balcazar and moved O’Donnell to third base. O’Donnell scored on a passed ball to make it 5-2.

In the fifth inning, South Bend was able to get within one run thanks to a two-run home run by Rafael Morel, making the lead 5-4.

But Dragons relief pitchers Joseph Menefee and Simon Miller shut the Cubs down over the final four innings and kept the one-run lead. Miller secured the save by pitching the final two innings. He pitched a perfect eighth inning before allowing a leadoff walk in the ninth. A good defensive play by shortstop Leo Balcazar led to a double play that took out the baserunner, and Miller got a strikeout to end the game.

The Dragons finished the game with eight hits from eight different players. Tanner’s ground rule double was the only extra-base hit. Stewart had an RBI single, scored a run and managed two walks.

Edgington, in his first High-A start, went five innings, allowing six hits and four runs with two walks and four strikeouts to earn the win.

Menefee replaced Edgington and pitched two scoreless innings, making five strikeouts and allowing one hit and one walk.

The Dragons are 10-7 in the second half and 44-39 overall.
