NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) – A Metro police officer was seriously injured in a fatal head-on collision on Bell Road early Wednesday morning.

The Metro Nashville Police Department (MNPD) said the accident occurred around 2:15 a.m. on Wednesday, July 10, near the intersection of Bell Road and Mt. View Road.

According to investigators, Homicide Sergeant Trevor VonDohlen was driving his Ford Edge police SUV when a Toyota Camry crossed into his lane and a head-on collision occurred. The driver of the Camry was identified as 26-year-old Carlos D. Atilano of Antioch. He died at the scene.

According to police, the investigation revealed that the Camry was traveling south on Bell Road toward the interstate when, for unknown reasons, it went over the right curb, backed up to the left and entered the northbound lane where VonDohlen was traveling.

At the time of the accident, police said VonDohlen was on his way to Creekview Drive to conduct an investigation into a reported suicide. His emergency equipment was not activated.

VonDohlen, 37, has worked for the MNPD for 12 years. He is currently at Vanderbilt University Medical Center.
