DVIDS – News – Strengthening unit cohesion through DEOCS: Strategies for long-term sustainability Summer school classes in Springfield close early due to heat

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (WNDU) – When it comes to Christmas squads, the popular saying is, “You don’t know who they are, but you know what they do.”

For those of you who aren’t familiar with the organization, their mission is to provide emotional support to grieving families during the holiday season through the magical, anonymous delivery of special gifts.

Well, it turns out that one of our guests on WNDU 16 News Now at Noon received that much-needed support from the group years ago, but never met any of the “angels” behind it.

Til today.

Viki Brown, Executive Director of Dustin’s Place, lost her husband in a car accident on August 2, 2016. At age 34, she suddenly found herself a widow and a single mother of a 6-year-old, a 5-year-old, and an 11-month-old. Her experience was the foundation for the founding of Dustin’s Place, as she recognized how important grief counseling is for children and how little it exists in our community.

When Brown and her family returned home from church that Christmas Eve, they found a Christmas command box containing a concrete angel that she still has in her yard to this day.

“Once you get it, you never forget it,” Brown said.

Fast forward to today, where Brown unexpectedly met “Chief Commando” Lynn Viater, who was also a guest on WNDU 16 News Now at 12 p.m.

When Brown realized that Viater was part of the Christmas Commandos, things came full circle for him and there were many tears in our studio.

“Love touched someone deeply because Viki simply shared her story with me,” Viater said of the emotional meeting.

You can see the touching moment for yourself in the video above! Plus, you can hear Joshua Short and Lauren Moss tell their side of the story and explain how these two different guests ended up booked on the same day in the video below:
