For the best family vacation destinations in the U.S., I started with a recent study from Rustic Pathways, a provider of educational travel for high school students. These are the folks you turn to when you want your cultured 14-year-old, bored of another year at day camp, to take an all-expenses-paid trip to, say, Costa Rica to save sea turtles while working on his Spanish skills. In addition to such lofty trips, Rustic Pathways promotes travel in general as an opportunity for personal change, increasing curiosity and developing a stronger worldview. To do so, the group analyzed relevant data points in 323 American cities, ranking them on affordability, safety and kid-friendly activities. The study weighted things like family activities per 100,000 people, average booking prices, public transit costs and crime per 100,000 residents. Cities were then given a score out of 100 and ranked to determine America’s most family-friendly cities. After researching the cities further and picking out the main attractions, I scoured highly rated Airbnbs and hotel rooms that I could actually imagine families staying in. The result: There are affordable, educational and action-packed destinations waiting for you and your family.
