Even picky eaters agree: If French fries are on the menu, they’ll most likely end up on your plate.

This irresistibly crispy, fluffy delicacy made from breaded potatoes dipped in hot oil is a staple of American cuisine and can be found almost everywhere in the States and the rest of the world.

The American version of the dish immediately brings to mind spicy chili and cheese on a basket of Coney-style fries, as a filling for po-boy sandwiches in New Orleans and the delicious horseshoe sandwich – a favorite of the capital.

Since its invention in 1680 in Belgium (not France!), the side dish has been waffled, corrugated, waved and shredded to suit the world’s flavour profiles – the way Canadians add cheese curds and warm gravy to make poutine, or in the same streets of Belgium where locals love to dip their fries in… mayonnaise.

In celebration of National Fry Day on July 12, the State Journal-Register is asking readers to help answer an important question: Who has the best French fries in Springfield, Illinois?

While some are quick to answer Arby’s Curly Fries or McDonald’s classic fries, we try to find out which place near Springfield has the best fries in town.

It’s by no means easy, but we’ve created a poll listing some of our staff’s favorite French fry restaurants in the area. Did we miss any? Take part and vote as many times as you like until the poll closes.

We’ll close the poll at 11:59 p.m. CDT on Friday, July 12, to give you time to voice your opinion.
