CARENCRO, Louisiana (KPLC) – The Lafayette Parish Sheriff’s Office has asked Louisiana State Police detectives to investigate the fatal shooting of an armed robbery suspect by sheriff’s deputies, according to Louisiana State Police Troop I.

Valerie Ponseti, spokeswoman for the Lafayette Parish Sheriff’s Office, said sheriff’s office officers were in the 400 block of Wagon Trail Road near Carencro last night, July 10, at around 7:45 p.m. when they located a suspect, Tony Pollard, who had been under investigation for several days.

Pollard was wanted for an armed robbery on July 4th in which two firearms were stolen. In addition, he was suspected in at least two other cases involving firearms offenses after that.

The sheriff’s office says when officers made contact with Ponseti to arrest him on a warrant for the July 4 incident, Pollard disobeyed several verbal commands and then began to behave in a threatening manner, prompting officers to respond with deadly force.

According to the Louisiana State Police, Pollard was pronounced dead at the scene and none of the officers were injured.

State Police investigators are asking anyone with information and/or pictures or video of the incident to contact them. This can be reported anonymously online through the State Police website by clicking on the “Report Suspicious or Criminal Activity” option or by calling the LSP Fusion Center hotline at 1-800-434-8007.
