When the owners of this charming home in the North Carolina beach town of Nags Head decided to tear down their ragtag cottage and start over, they had one guiding brief: no signs of new construction. “They wanted the house to look like it had always been here,” says Arianna Pannoni of Baltimore-based Winsome Interior Design of the couple, who have vacationed in the tight-knit community for generations. They wanted their friends and family to feel relaxed—that they wouldn’t think twice about coming home from the beach covered in sand and plopping down on the sofa like they always do, adds design partner Kasey Bedford.

To meet this brief, designers turned to contemporary woodwork, high-performance textiles and finishes that were chosen explicitly for their aging potential, while optimizing the layout to meet the homeowners’ actual needs. An unused closet off the kitchen was converted into a coffee bar and designed to look like an “original” built-in cabinet. The sunlit dining nook – carved out of the area of the wraparound patio – comfortably seats 12 people, a number that is not unusual in mid-summer.

They wanted the house to look like it had always been here.

In the kitchen – a collaboration between Winsome and Tanya Smith-Shiflett of Unique Kitchens & Baths – two-tone cabinets à la Julia Child add a subtle vintage vibe. There’s a mix of easily accessible open shelving and cabinets to keep clutter out. The unpainted brass hardware and fixtures were chosen to look better with age.

More patina comes through the woodwork. Bedford admits it took some persuasion to get the blue floors. “In the past, painted wood floors were popular in coastal homes because they hold up well to sand and water and are easy to touch up,” she says. The client agreed, and the color flows underfoot in most of the 180-square-foot rooms. The V-groove paneling used throughout, including in the master bath and powder room, adds to the feel of yesteryear.

The designers also eliminated closets in the four bedrooms, replacing them with clever storage and suitcase furniture. “When you’re here, you wear a swimsuit and shorts,” says Pannoni. “You really just need a place to put your suitcase.”
