UPDATE 09.07.24: The Greene County District Attorney’s Office has filed charges against the suspect in connection with the July 5 murder of 46-year-old Jack Osborn and 44-year-old Melissa Smith on West Chestnut Street, while police continue to search for him.

The suspect was identified by the Springfield Homicide Division as 39-year-old Jeffrey Garrett of St. Louis. He is charged with two counts of first-degree murder and two counts of armed criminal action.


According to Springfield police, Garrett is not currently in custody.

The Springfield Police Department is currently investigating the incident. UPDATE 11:58 am – Two people are dead after a shooting near West Chestnut Street overnight.

According to a press release from the Springfield Police Department (SPD), officers found 46-year-old Jack Osborn with a gunshot wound in a residence in the 1600 block of W. Chestnut St. Osborn died at the scene.

A second victim, 44-year-old Melissa Evans, was also found with gunshot wounds, SPD said. She was taken to a local hospital where she died.

The SPD says it has no information about the suspect in the shooting.

Neighbors told OzarksFirst that when they heard the gunshots, they first thought they were fireworks.

“(But it was) more like a bang, a gunshot sound,” said Paige Cook, who lives across the street from the shooting.

Nicholas Reeves lives a few houses away and says violent crimes of this kind do not normally occur in this area.

“It’s a pretty quiet area most of the time,” Reeves said. “Sometimes it can get a little weird out here.”

SPRINGFIELD, Missouri – The Springfield Police Department (SPD) reports that a man is dead and a woman is injured after an early morning shooting.

According to SPD, officers were called to an area near West Chestnut Street and the North Kansas Expressway around 3:15 a.m. on July 5.

A man died at the scene of the accident and a woman was taken to hospital, the SPD said. Her condition is currently unknown.

According to the SPD, no one has been arrested yet and no suspects have been identified.

Officers are still on scene and said West Chestnut Street is currently closed from the Kansas Expressway west to North Farmer Avenue. SPD is currently unsure how long the area will be closed.
