South Bend Cubs press release

Dayton, OH – Despite a strong bullpen performance and not allowing a single run after the 3rd inning, the South Bend Cubs fell to the Dayton Dragons on Wednesday night by a final score of 5-4. Dayton won the first two games of this week’s series, and South Bend lost its fourth game in a row.

The Cubs led 2-0 early in this game. Right-hander Brian Edgington, just called up from Low-A Daytona, made his debut on the Dragons’ mound in the Midwest League. Edgington retired the first two players he faced in the 1st inning, then Pedro Ramirez hit a single. Then there was a walk, a hit-by-pitch and a two-run infield single by Ed Howard. Edgington struck out two batters in the 1st inning after striking out just one man in 71-plus innings at Low-A.

With a 2-0 lead, South Bend sent right-hander Nick Dean to the mound. After his first loss of the season, Dean conceded two runs in the bottom of the first inning on a wild pitch and an RBI groundout.

With the score tied at 2-2, Dayton scored another run in the 2nd and two in the 3rd inning to take a 5-2 lead. Dayton has scored five runs in each of the first two games of this series, with all of the runs coming from the starting pitchers. The South Bend bullpen has yet to allow a run.

Out of the bullpen, Mitchell Tyranski threw 1.1 scoreless innings. Nick Hull then added two shutout innings of his own before Tyler Santana threw two consecutive scoreless innings.

South Bend got closer in the 5th inning thanks to Rafael Morel. Morel hit his third home run in six games in July and hit two long-ball home runs. Morel’s brother Christopher also hit a home run tonight for the Chicago Cubs in Baltimore. It was the first time Christopher hit a big league home run on the same night as Rafael in the minor leagues.

The Cubs scored several times during the rest of the game to tie the game, but were unable to reach it.

Dayton and South Bend will meet again on Thursday evening at 7:05 p.m. Right-hander Sam Armstrong will be on the mound for the Cubs.
