OAKLAND – A man suspected of attacking two elderly women on San Pablo Avenue in Oakland was arrested nearby in Emeryville. Clarence J. Esteen, 31, of Antioch, remains in custody at the Alameda County Santa Rita Jail. He cannot be released on bail.

Esteen was recently released from prison after previously being convicted of assault with a firearm and robbery. The new crimes he allegedly committed occurred on July 5 at around 6:30 p.m. in the 5500 block of San Pablo Avenue.

The two elderly ladies were beaten and robbed during an attack that was captured on surveillance video. An off-duty Oakland officer and other witnesses followed the suspect and pointed him out to responding Oakland officers.

Esteen was arrested on July 5 at 7:24 p.m. He was charged with kidnapping, false imprisonment,

Assault, robbery, probation violation and other crimes. Esteen is suspected of committing three other robberies in the area.

On July 9, several charges were filed against Esteen, including second-degree robbery, which was related to other robberies. However, no charges were filed for the July 5 incident because the identities of the elderly victims are unknown.

In a prepared statement, Oakland police said, “The off-duty officer assisted in recovering the stolen items and returning them to the victims, who immediately left the area. Oakland police are asking for the public’s assistance in identifying the victims.” Anyone with information on any of the victims can contact the police Criminal Investigation Division at 510-238-3326.
